Our dedication to quality teaching focuses on instilling comprehension and genuine understanding in our students. We also cover exam technique in depth, including how to structure your answers for maximum marks. We provide:
Weekly classes where our teachers comprehensively cover all relevant theory and exam technique
Comprehensive approach to teaching which ensures students understand the underlying principles and don't need to rely on memorisation
Focus on exam execution skills and structuring answers to receive full marks, regardless of question complexity
After-hour support from our tutors who are happy to provide homework assistance
Revision / exam preparation classes leading up to end of the term
We are very selective in who we hire to teach our classes. We like to keep a mix between quality teachers who teach at reputable schools, PhD students with extensive classroom experience, and recent state-rankers who have done exceptionally well in a recent HSC but also have extensive classroom experience as a tutor. We will never hire teachers who have little or no classroom experience. One thing all our teaching staff have in common is their passion to teach. They love what they do, and are always keen to help our students achieve their best.
We currently do not offer English at any level, however this is subject to change in the future. Core subjects (English, Maths, Science) for younger years (7-10) may be offered at a later date.
Our classes are limited to 7 to 9 students per class, depending on which subject (please call to ask). Most classes currently have around 4-5 students each. While larger classes make more money, we prefer to start new classes as soon as one grows too big.
Small class sizes facilitate an individualised teaching approach, and our teachers can better focus on each student's unique needs. We believe that 15 is the maximum class size before the teacher's ability to focus on individual students is compromised.
Students benefit from the class environment because of the competitive energy in a classroom which motivates students to try harder.
No, you won't need to buy anythiing else (books etc). All materials and coursework will be provided to you. As a student, you will also gain access to our collection of past papers and theory notes.
Both has its benefits and uses. Generally speaking, students who know what their weak areas are can benefit most from 1 on 1 tutoring. However there are certain considerations and risk factors associated with 1 on 1:
Quality: genuinely good private tutors are hard to come by. If you go with a tutor who doesn't work out, you've wasted money, but more importantly, you've wasted time in your most critical year. The quality of our teachers is closely controlled through careful hiring decisions based on teaching skill and regular Student-Satisfaction Surveys.
Structure: an institutional environment such as Dux College strictly adheres to a set structure which is optimally designed to follow the official HSC syllabi. Private tutors often do follow any set structure in their teaching, and will assist the student in whatever subject / topic he/she requests. This lack of structure is not a problem if the student knows exactly what he/she needs to be taught, however for the majority of students, this is not the case.
Competition: Preliminary and HSC students should never stay in their comfort zone. They must constantly be made aware of the level of their peers and stay competitive to the greater population of students. This is because the UAI is in essence a rank, so this makes University entrance a zero-sum game. The competitive environment created in a class setting is healthy and beneficial to students.
Cost: with regards to the first concern of Quality, often is the case that high quality comes with high cost. A private tutor with years of HSC teaching experience will cost anywhere up to $100/hr and above.
We are not saying one form of tuition is inherently superior to another, it all depends on your preferences. We at Dux College offer the small-class model, which has proven to be effective and successful in helping our students achieve their HSC goals.
We treat our students like adults who are responsible for their own education. We set homework after each class which is part of our program, designed to reinforce concepts taught for that week. Students are expected to attempt the whole homework exercise each week, and seek assistance from our tutors on our forums.
However we understand that students have school assessments to study for, and we are supportive of that. We definitely won't force you to do our homework over your school assessments. It goes without saying that HSC assessments take absolute first priority in a student's schedule, so we will understand if you're behind a week or two as a result of a recent assessment.
Our students understand that the whole point of tutoring is to learn ahead, and with that said, our programs are designed to make school homework seem like revision. In our experience, our students tend to find school homework much easier than tutoring homework, and they prefer more challenging exercises.
In past years, 80% of our students achieved UAI's of over 90. Over 90% of our students doing Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 achieved Band E4 for these subjects. We pride ourselves in our high standard of achievement, especially considering the "before and after" changes of some of our students. (Read our case studies)
Dux College believes in upholding affordability as a high priority. Our rates are very reasonable and is currently approximately $25 per hour inc. GST, before any discounts (e.g. early payment, if you come with friends, etc).
